Do colleges see ASL as a acceptable language?
Answered

To start I just want to say I’m a freshmen in high school. I have always wanted to take ASL but recently I, found out that colleges don’t like it or don’t see it as a real language. I’m not sure if this is right and I’m not sure who to ask. Any advice or comments on this topic I would love to hear them!

Hey there! ASL is a super cool class - it's great that you're interested in it!

Thankfully, ASL is increasingly being recognized as a legitimate foreign language by many colleges and universities. Here is a link to a list of schools that recognize and accept ASL as an appropriate foreign language: nad.org/resources/directories/statewide-universities-that-accept-asl/ The universities that accept ASL do not view it as any "less" of a language than any other, either.

In the event that the colleges you're interested in applying to do not accept ASL as a language, make sure to enroll in a different, accepted language, such as Spanish or French. Keep in mind that even if a college doesn't formally accept ASL as a foreign language for their requirements, your experience with ASL will still serve as an asset on your application. It demonstrates your dedication to language learning and unique skills that could contribute to the college's community. You can totally still take ASL as an elective-type course if your school allows!

If you pursue ASL and decide you're interested in continuing it into college, you can investigate the college's course catalog or listings, which will show if they offer ASL classes. If they don't, you may be able to partner with another nearby institution to pursue those classes if they're offered.

I hope this helps - let me know if you have any other questions! Best of luck to you! <3
