Hello, I am an Asian homeschooler from Nebraska who is interested in applying for Harvard University. I am also going to be entering my senior year of high school. Due to my background, it's been difficult for me to get into any traditional extracurricular activities especially with the pandemic the past few years. Does anyone have any advice on how I can strengthen my application?
GPA: 4.0
Current highest SAT: 1470 - 720 Math - 750 EBRW
Current highest ACT: 33 - 36 English - 31 Math - 34 Reading - 31 Science
7 Dual-enrollment courses so far
ECs: Family business, ESL teaching through Zoom, Scripps National Spelling Bee Participant 2018 + 2019 (middle school), Governor-elect TeenPact Online 2021, National Merit Scholar Candidate (results not in yet), C4 Leadership Training, Eta Sigma Alpha Chi Zeta Chapter (national homeschool honor society), Board Games club organizer (pre-pandemic), KVNO Classical Kids Competition July 2018 winner (middle school), Newspaper reporter/editor (homeschool co-op, pre-pandemic)
Your academics and ECs are both quite strong! To improve, I'd say that you should do two things:
1. Keep taking the SAT or ACT. You will need to score at least a 1550 SAT/35 ACT to be competitive for top schools. You are almost there!
2. Your EC list so far shows that you are well-rounded, high achieving, and have intellectual curiosity in various fields. Now all it needs is a spike, or activities which relate to your major and career of interest. Add at least two activities of this type to your list and try to make a tangible impact through them. This blog post has some examples of activities you could do at home.
Hope this helps!
Hey there, if you're considering homeschooling, here's some advice to help you get started. First of all, make sure to do thorough research on your state's homeschooling laws and requirements. It's also important to establish a routine and set clear expectations for yourself and your children. Homeschooling can be challenging at times, so don't be afraid to reach out for support from other homeschoolers in your community or online groups.
