How can I connect my ec's under one theme?

Hi friends.

I am confusion. My interests are all over the place and I feel like that is not good. Colleges usually look for some sort of spike or at least a theme to connect someone's interests and tie the narrative together.

My main three things are languages, chess, and girls in STEM (mainly science and math).

How would I even tie these together? Like I get how chess connects to math and science, but where would the languages come in??

Hello,

Though a theme or a spike is important, I believe that having more than one theme on your EC's will not harm your applications.

Your main EC's, I think, are not that far apart. You can use essay prompts to connect them if you want. There is also a language in math and science, so you can connect the two by pointing out how they are similar. For example, just as there is a formulation in math and their order to solve, there is a formulation of words and their order in languages! You could also claim that scientific and mathematical formulas are universal languages.

All three of your main ecs can be thought of as communication methods in their own way. Language is obvious. In chess, the movements you make have meanings, and if I'm not mistaken, there are some ways to keep track of your movements by writing them down, so you might want to think about that. There are also formulations, codes, and other distinct languages for math, science, and other STEM-related fields.

Because it is your essay and should tell your story, I can't go into too much detail on the topics, but I hope I gave you a good idea. You can also connect them to your desired major, which is preferable to attempting to tie them all together.

Good luck!

Science and math are languages in themselves, if you think about it. When learning a language you need to learn the rules and apply them to your own original thoughts, which is the same with chess, science, and math.

I think it's okay like this, they don't need to be super connected and they're all like academic activities and whatnot but in your essays you could talk about wanting to connect with others and build a community to connect languages and girls in STEM. Maybe for chess and the language you could talk about the idea that like (this is a bit cringy but) you can play chess with anybody and you don't need to speak the same language because it's a game.
