Hello,
I am a Junior and I wish to become a secondary teacher. I recently came across a poster saying that my local summer school needs assistance, so I emailed them asking for more information. But is it worth it? My mother and father thinks its stupid, but I want more experience to know if this is something I want for the rest of my life. I love working with students, and I love helping others. The job is 12 an hour, I work 4 days a week for about 3-4 hours. I am also wondering if this is good pay, since this is my first job.
I think that this is a great opportunity for you that would be worthwhile to pursue. The main reason is not because the job of being a teacher's aid is exceptional, but because figuring out your career interests early in life can bring you huge benefits. If you have long-term career goals early on, it will create a domino effect in your success - you will make better choices about the colleges you apply to, the major you choose, and the work experiences you gain along the way. The sooner you can step out of the exploration phase of building your career, the better.
Being a teacher's aid will help you decide on whether working in education is right for you. If the experience shows you that this is the field for you, you will be ahead of the game in terms of career planning. If you learn that another field would be better, you will have more time to explore other options. The job itself will also probably be more enjoyable to you than other jobs available to high school students, and it pays fairly well - $12 and hour is higher than the minimum wage in most areas. Hope this helps!
Honestly being a teacher's aide doesn't do anything for you besides lets you connect with the teacher and give you time to relax by doing errands or simple tasks. You can if you want to though! I'm an office aide at my school and all I do is deliver passes and sort things for the people there. I basically get free time from there to do my work and talk if wanted. Something good that could come out of it is certain benefits like recommendations.
I think this is a good opportunity but you should always ask your parents why they think they think what they do. I also think this is good pay and if you want to be a teacher I'm pretty sure that's all teachers start off as so I would say go for it!
That is good pay and fairly good experience, listen to your parents but if you can sell them on it then yes, go for it.
