I am a junior planning to major in a humanities or social science discipline. My extracurriculars, community involvement, and grades/coursework are strong in these areas and reflect my interests, eg. A+ average in honors/AP humanities courses, speech and debate state competition winner/nationals qualifier, leader of 3+ clubs @ school, founder of youth advocacy org, etc.
Will my initial low placement in STEM courses (despite high grades/academic awards for performance in these courses since 9th grade and eventually more advanced courses) jeopardize my chances of admission at selective liberal arts schools, or can I compensate somehow? Do these institutions care whether I only reach precalc by senior year, considering my intended major?
Your freshmen year class placements will not negatively affect your odds of admission. Taking rigorous classes now will make up for it, and pre-calc is an acceptable level of math for a humanities major to reach. I recommend taking one of the easier AP STEM classes as well, such as AP Bio, AP Environmental Science, or AP States. Hope this helps!
