I’m a junior (class of 2024) and I don’t have a field of study picked. I have so many interests that I can’t imagine giving up STEM to pursue English/humanities and vice versa. The only thing I really don’t enjoy is foreign languages. I feel all this pressure to have an idea of what to study, but I really don’t know. When should I have my idea, and is it okay to go to college as undecided? I feel like not having an idea is limiting me a little.
I recommend choosing a major as soon as you can. Even if you are not certain about the major, putting your foot down on one will give you time to develop a spike with your extracurriculars and classes.
As for applying undecided, it can look like a solid direction if you explain your decision like this: "I am interested in art, engineering, and biology, but I am not sure yet how I want to pursue all three subjects at X college. By applying undecided, I will have more time to explore the intersections of these subjects and the most relevant academic offerings at X college."
Hope this helps!
It is ok to apply to colleges as undecided (That is what I did). Some colleges/universities are very flexible and will give you time (Usually until your Junior or Sophomore year of college) to choose which major you would like to study.
