I’m applying for a summer english program and i have asked my english teacher to write a recommendation letter. As I have not known them long, we are planning to meet and get to know each other better. Should i discuss my achievements with them during the meeting? Or things like values and leadership?
What do they need to know to write the recommendation letter?
Also, they nominated me for the program, so that’s why i asked them to write it, along with my respect of them as a teacher and person.
Hi @donut-armada5!
The primary focus of a letter of recommendation is not "what your achievements are", but rather "how you achieved them". A resume can do an effective job of conveying your accomplishments to your teacher as well as the one admitting you to the program.
The interview is an opportunity to let your teacher know about you as a person. Tell them about your values and how your values and work ethics have helped you in life (not limited to studies). Communicate your interests and future plans. They will be advocating for you, so make sure you give them enough to write about.
Hope this helps!
Thanks! That’s super helpful.
