What is the difference between NSHSS and NHS? This group sent me an invitation to apply but they are based in Scotland. My friends think that it is a scam. Help!!
Hi! I am going to try to keep this as simple as possible. NHS is more exclusive than NSHSS as it is on an individual level (through your school) while NSHSS is nationwide in terms of members joining. NHS is also free while NSHSS requires you to pay a $75 fee. NSHSS claims to offer the same benefits as NHS but in my opinion, I believe it is better to join NHS as it looks better on college applications and it is free!
there is absolutely no point in joining nshss. its a legitimate honor society but it means absolutely nothing to most schools as it is not exclusive whatsoever. additionally, whatever money you earn in "scholarships" are going to be the same or less than the $75 join fee so... i wouldnt bother.
Both are honor societies, but like others have said NHS is definitely harder to get into, therefore it looks better on applications, and it offers scholarships that are more school specific. NSHSS is really great though,NHS is really great and the fee to join is mostly based on your school, mine was only $15 for juniors. I recently became an ambassador for NSHSS, and just being a member can provide you with discounts on SAT/ACT tutoring programs, it has specialized trips to ivy league schools and other countries, and once you join you're considered a lifelong member. It's definitely not a scam, don't worry, and I think that if you can do both, then do both, and if you can't do one or the other, that's ok.
To keep this community safe and supportive:
I agree with @DarkShadow! NSHSS does offer scholarships, but most of them are for high school students or for certain categories of students (major-specific or race-specific), so the lifelong membership is pretty useless if you don't qualify for anything they offer.
