Letters of Recomendations

When is a good time to begin to ask for letters of recommendation? I come from a large school with over 300 people in my graduating class, so I want to make sure I can get letters of recommendation from the teachers I feel know me best. Also one of the colleges I want to apply to needs a letter of recommendation from my counselor. I hardly speak to her, so would now be a good time to start building a relationship with her?

I recommend asking your teachers as soon as possible if they would be willing to write you a letter. Once you have their commitment, your recommendation will be one of the first they write. Building a relationship with your counselor is also something to work on as soon as you can.

As for inviting your teachers to write your recommendations on Common App, you can do that during the summer before your senior year. By then, your school list will be close to finalized and each school's application will be updated.

Hope this helps!
