Hi, I've recently been developing a strong interest in public policy. As a high school student, I would like to learn more about public policy and actually get a chance to engage in analyzing and writing public policy. What are some things you would suggest? I would really appreciate your ideas and suggestions!
@emilyK I know the other poster already mentioned Model UN, but as the VP of my school's Model UN, I feel obligated to mention it as a truly excellent way to get into public policy. As a plus, it really, really stands out to colleges, especially if you're an accomplished delegate. Another option (very similar to MUN but worth mentioning regardless) is Boys/Girls State. I haven't done it myself, but I've heard great things about it and it's definitely a great chance to get involved with public policy. Again, as the other poster mentioned, local governments may offer internships and such, but consider also that public policy extends beyond government- you may be able to work with various charities or NGOs if there are any in your area. Another opportunity that you may be able to take advantage of is the Senate page program- look it up, it's a super neat opportunity to work on Capitol Hill as a high school student.
Hi,
You could take part in MUNs and student council because these activities involve formal paperwork and a similar mindset to that of a person working on pubic policy. Apart from that you could also intern with the local government(mayor's office etc) to get exposure to the environment that policy makers work in, plus, you would be able to interact with people in the particular or similar field and gain more understanding
Hope it helps!
