Course Selection

Hey guys, I was just had a question regarding what course to take in Junior year. I'm a sophomore right now, and I am currently wanting to go into medicine. I was initially planning on taking AP Stats for a GPA boost, but my counselor told me that Junior year is the year which colleges take the closest look at, and not having another science course on my schedule (accompanying Honors Physics), is not advisable if you want to go into medicine. She then advised me to take genetics, a regular class. I am stuck on which course to pick, do I pick the GPA booster, or genetics for the medicine field? My GPA is a 4.2 right now. Thanks in advance!

While your counselor is correct junior year is commonly looked at the most, I’d disregard her advice on genetics. Colleges want to see rigor and a high GPA over a correlation with classes and what you want to major in. Especially since some schools don’t offer a lot of those classes that align with different majors. Personally I’d take AP Stats because that is a hard class and will boost your GPA. Good luck!

Hi @SM_23!

AP Stats seems to be the better choice because it's an AP, so it'll have a higher impact on your weighted GPA. Med schools don't care about what courses you took in high school unless it's a dual enrollment course taken for college credit. Right now, try focusing on college, not med school.

AP Stats is still a STEM class.

Hope this helps!
