Volunteer opportunities for 16 year olds

I'm a sixteen year old in the upstate, NY area and looking to get in some volunteer hours for NHS and to look better on college applications. Any ideas for me?

I volunteered at a local foodbank for several days, packing food. It's a great way to connect with the community and give back!

I am 16 and live in California so opportunities may be different, but I love volunteering as a general helper at my local library. I also recommend volunteering in things that you are interested in because I believe colleges appreciate when they can see you are committed to something you are passionate about.

This CollegeVine blog post lists places where you could volunteer as a 16-year-old. Hope this helps!

I volunteered at Habitat for Humanity ReStores in VA. Not sure if there's one near you.

ReStores are nonprofit home improvement stores and donation centers that sell new and gently used furniture, appliances, home accessories, building materials and more to the public at a fraction of the retail price.

Here's the link: https://www.habitat.org/restores/volunteer

They accept 16 years old as long as you submit a parent consent form.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

I recommend your local library! I am the treasurer of my local library's youth group and I have had so much fun and gotten so many hours from it! As a fellow New Yorker, check and see if your library has a "Friends" group (most in my part of New York do) and see if they have a "Junior Friends" group. If they don't, starting a partner group with the adult group looks awesome on any application and is bound to get you some hours.
