I think the 2nd one is the strongest due to the level of personal connection and metaphorical reflection as well as specificity, but the first would be great too if you were to write it well! Both of these are unique and personal, so as long as you personal statement has depth, perspective and reflects you as a person, then either would work.

The first one sounds the strongest to me because I feel you can touch more than one aspect of you with it and dive more deeply.
