My theatre college essay

Theatre or theater. Theatre is referring to the art of acting whilst theater is referring to the place like an auditorium or stage. A fact that many people involved in the arts will know, but will an admissions officer? I wrote my college essay on my nasty experience in my theatre department but google docs keeps showing that cursed red line underneath. I'm worried that colleges are gonna see that stupid red line and think I don't even know how to spell my own hobby!! So please help, should I go back and switch it to theater or keep it as theatre.

It depends on where you live. For the most part, theater is the accepted spelling in the US, but other parts of the world spell it like theatre. However, as an American, I spell it like theatre anyway because it's more universal. I would go with theatre if I were you.

I definitely think (as a theatre kid at least) that you should spell it with an -re. That is how it is generally spelled in many countries and I have also seen it spelled that way in academic texts!
