Reflecting Thoughts

Hey y’all! I just completed my first year of college at a B10 school and in appreciation for all of the help I received from everyone on my college journey I thought I would lay a few things out that I found really helpful when doing applications and the journey as a whole.

My college (CAS) requires 4 years of HS foriegn language in order to be exempt from the requirement to take language in college. The university only asks applicants for 3 years. KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY! I really wished I took Spanish my senior year.

When building an application (essay and resume) besides the typical cliches that anyone on here should know tie it all in to form a narrative. Think of your application like the why you want to attend xyz program essay. Truly feel like it has opened doors I otherwise wouldn’t be able to open. For example I know I want to work in a somewhat niche area. Do not do a field make it specific. If you wanna be a doctor say I want to be a doctor in underserved rural communities.

Don’t be afraid to cold contact people. A lot of clubs have a public relations VP and their contact details are usually public. Try to ask about the expierence on campus to see if where you’re applying is a good fit. Once I was on campus I reached out the prez of a club I was in and was an incredibly helpful person about the more upper level expierences.

This is really big when deciding where to enroll. At my B10 school there are lots of specific classes that cover incredibly interesting and niche topics that I’d love to learn about including a tad niche computer science class that’s crucial for my field. Only 1 class offers learning about that. Smaller schools have benefits but also drawbacks including not as many sections. That’s my biggest thing I never thought of hands down.

A lot of things are to an extent luck of the draw so make sure to not over stress it and try to work on what you can control such as your ECs quality of essays and most importantly your GPA.

Good luck as rising seniors yall!!!
