Do I need a passion project or "spike" to get into UCLA?

I've heard you need a passion project or something that stands out to enter competitive schools. With a GPA of 3.8 and many leadership activities and experience, I am wondering if it is enough for me to stand out and get in. Should I start one or focus on what I write in my essays instead?

You're lucky. In my high school, a community-initiative based passion project is required to graduate...

A passion project can take anywhere from about 3 months+ (including preparations).

A passion project can allow colleges to show that you deeply care about that interest of yours, and people with high profiles tend to look similar and what (USA) colleges look for in terms of standing out is 1. Are you the type of student we are looking for this year? and 2. What makes you unique that helps improve our community of students?

Every student has leadership activities and experience, high scores, etc. You should start one (in my opinion) to be more flexible when it comes to writing your essay for college as it will be a unique experience that you can add. However, it's your choice.

Hope this helps,
