Hi!
So basically I need help to decide whether or not to take a gap year. I am currently planning on going to the University of Hawaii Manoa, but the out-of-state cost is almost double what it would be if I lived there. I'm considering moving there for a year after highschool to gain residency, so then the cost of tuition goes down majorly. The only thing is, I'm worried that it will affect my chances to get in. I also want to keep in mind that living in Hawaii is kinda expensive. So basically I just need some advice. Thanks! Also if anyone has done a campus tour if you could tell me how it went that would be amazing.
You should talk to your high school counselor and ask if there are any cons of taking a gap year. My sister took a gap year and she had no issues getting into college. It really didn't affect her chances at all, but she did apply to a small university.
If finances are a big concern, it could be very wise to take a gap year to lower costs. BUT if you do take a gap year, don't just work. Keep up with your interests. If there is something specific you would like to pursue, keep pursuing it. If possible, get a job related to that field. Then you can write your essay and basically say, I took a gap year and I grew SO much during that time. You may not be able to add your activities to the application (I am not sure how that works) but you can share how you continued to pursue that passion and the growth that happened. Many gap year students either travel or work at a grocery store. Colleges will be happy to see that you stayed true to the interests you had in high school and used that time to pursue it further.
Hope that makes sense. Lmk if you have any more questions!
