SAT
Answered

Hi! I took the May SAT and I am not happy with the score I got especially on the English section.

I am aiming for a 1560+ and I am retaking the test in August. Does anyone have any resources (preferably free) to use to prepare for the RW. Minding that I am a non-native speaker, and I have already read tons of novels. I would appreciate it if anyone has a study plan :)

I have a perfect GPA and I do have good extracurriculars but I don't want the SAT to ruin everything as I am aiming for T20

Do you mind sharing your English score?

This time I got a 570 on the English and an almost perfect math score. Although in practice and older tests I used to get 650+ on the English section

Ok, that's helpful. Just wanted to make sure my score was higher before I tried to help you, or else I am not help at all and I'm the one that needs help, lol! :) Another question so I can help you the most: What areas are you struggling with most? Your score report page should have a breakdown of your skill levels in each area. I know strategies for different types of questions.

I'd appreciate tips for everything lol, but the section I did the best in was craft and structure the rest were lower

This is from the official college board site if it helps: satsuite.collegeboard.org/sat/practice-preparation

(If the link doesn't work copy and paste it into the search engine)

I have not taken the SAT yet as a freshman but my best advice for it would be to practice the practice tests given on college board and other websites as I have heard they can help a lot.

I improved my reading score from 650 to 760 mostly by looking at the SAT question bank. It has all of the questions from the practice tests so if you don't want the practice tests to be spoiled I don't suggest using it, but it helps you focus your studying more. You can sort by question type and difficulty and it has 100's of questions. With the sections you struggle with Khan Academy and Youtube videos will be very helpful. I struggled mostly with standard conventions of English but you can find videos that help with anything.

So, first I will explain my study plan/what I did and what scores I got.

In October, I took the paper test and got 730. I only used Khan Academy but I made sure to practice about 20 minutes every day from the end of August until the beginning of October. I will say that I am a very strong reader and grammar/reading comprehension are all strengths. Also, the paper test was a little more straightforward. The passages were longer, but most were chapters from fiction and I find that very easy to analyze.

Math is actually my weakness, so I would love to hear your study plan/what you used!! :)

In March, I got a 710 on the RW section. They changed what kind of questions they ask for the digital vs. the paper, so I got a lower score. I used Strategic Test Prep's English pdf workbook (used their math as well) and LOVED it! Tons and tons of questions compiled to give you hours of practice in each type of question plus strategies and tips for each type. I got it for free at the time by signing up for their email list but I think they switched to providing the math book for free. Both are normally $25 and worth so much more. Yes, I prefer free resources, but this is one I would spend on. STP also has a Youtube channel where you can watch videos on DSAT english and math. I found those extremely helpful as well.

I don't want to give too many of STP's tips to respect their copyright :) but here's a few:

Start on #15 in each English module. Those are the easy grammar (craft and structure) questions. You don't need to stress yourself and waste time over the first really hard questions, which are often the trickiest (like vocab!). Save yourself a lot of anxiety and start with the easier ones.

Eliminate. Use the cross-off feature to your advantage and cross out obviously wrong answers.

Main idea and main purpose of a passage is 2 completely different things. The main idea of the passage is its conclusion, or in other words, its author's position on the central content. The point. The main idea is usually stated directly. The main purpose of the passage is the reason the author is writing the text.

Read all questions before you begin to read the passage, so you know what you're looking for.

For graph questions, 9 out of 10 times, you don't even need the graph. Just read the last 2 sentences of the paragraph below the graph and then answer the question. It saves a lot of confusion.

Practice, practice, practice! And keep reading. It can make all the difference.

Hope you find this helpful. Please lmk if you have any questions!
