Basically, I'm a rising junior, I have a psat score of 1090, I took four honors classes, a 3.8 gpa, im planning on taking four ap classes next year, I do tennis, DECA, and I'm apart of my school's student council. What is it going to take for me to get into an ivy/good school or should I just call it quits?
Do not quit! You got this. You may not get into an Ivy but it's worth a try. And, I want to add that a college does not have to be an Ivy to be a good school and it DEFINITELY does not have to be an Ivy to be the best fit for you! I personally could have spent all of high school preparing for an Ivy but I found that another school was a much better fit because it had the training approach I wanted (less study, more hands-on experience and internships). Find schools that fit your passion and learning style, and apply to a range of schools (safety, target, reach...if you dk what that means, use Big Future college search on Collegeboard).
And yes, you can improve grades with better study habits but a warning I would add to what Luke said is don't kill yourself with study :) I worked too hard sophmore year and got very, very sick...I was down for a whole month! Thank God I am homeschooled and could easily catch up without any grade consequences! Your social life is important too; high school is a time like no other so don't lose it entirely to books. Balance is key, just like with everything else in life. Set good habits for yourself, like using special apps that put your phone into a study-mode sort of thing so the phone won't allow you to open certain apps/messages. When it's time for homework, do not pick up the phone until you are done. Limit distractions; you will be amazed how much easier it is to study if you aren't checking a screen every minute. It really zaps your brain and too many good students with great minds get bad grades because of technology addiction.
I honestly would not say that your profile looks like an Ivy student but like I said, ivies are not always the best place to go. I have heard of many students work hard to get into an Ivy just to hate the atmosphere and transfer out. Pay attention to your learning style (highly academic vs. highly hands-on, etc) and then research colleges with the major you want and get a flavor of their styles. Does it seem like a good place for you? Important question that most students disregard...we can get so caught up in doing what's ranked #1 or what peers are doing that we just go with the flow. Keep an open mind!
Hope this helps and DO NOT QUIT! You are capable of much, you just need to find what matters to you and then work for it. If you are studying in preparation for a career you love, it will be totally worth it. Please reach out with any questions!
It seems like you're already doing a lot. I'm honestly not sure what you're worried about. AP, sports, student council, all of those things look really great on college applications. My only advice is to not stress so much on getting into an Ivy school above all else. There are a lot of "good schools" who aren't as fiercely competitive, it really depends on what major/career you want, so try to look into colleges that have a good program for what you want. Other than that, keep an eye out for scholarships early, but don't stress too much, a lot of colleges favor the personal essays to test scores. Just make sure to enjoy your Jr. year and get experiences you can write about. Remember, not to get burnt out before you even get to college. Good luck, you got this!
I don’t think you’re cooked, just try and do something that will really stand out to college admissions. You don’t want to be like everyone else, maybe join / start a community group that not very many / if any high schoolers are apart of. It’s not all totally about your grades! Keep up the good work, keep studying, have fun & have an open mind.
