Hello, World! I'm currently a junior at a very small, rural school in Texas, and I've got plans to go into the Computer Science/Engineering field. I’ve been kind of overwhelming myself with questions like, “Is this enough,” “Where am I going to go,” and “What can I do to further myself right now?” I've got some volunteer hours under the belt (maybe around 30 hours?) for volunteer tutoring failing students of all grades. In addition, I'm taking some Dual Credit enrollment with Vernon, Midwestern State, and UTPB (In all, I am currently knocking out 5 college-level courses, on top of 4 previous ones). Overall, here is a list of what I've done so far:
- Volunteer tutoring (~30 vol. hours and continuing)
- College Courses (~26 credits in progress/complete and continuing)
College Biology + Lab (10th Fall) [4]
Music Appreciation (10th Spring) [3]
Sociology (10th Summer) [3]
US History Pt. 1 (10th Summer) [3]
US History Pt. 2 (11th Fall) [3]
Anatomy & Physiology + Lab (11th Fall) [4]
Petroleum Fundamentals (11th Fall) [3]
Composition I (11th Fall [3]
- Number Sense UIL State 1A Placer (2nd in 2023, 3rd in 2024)
- Science and Mathematics UIL District Placer
- GPA 4.0 Unweighted, ~4.33 Weighted (idk the specifics yet but this is what it looked like from my sophomore year)
- Language Credits (Spanish) - 1 Complete, 1 In Progress
Hobbies/Extracurricular Activities
- Coding (HTML/CSS, Python, JavaScript)
- After-school Number Sense Studies
- Studying At Home (mainly STEM topics)
Major Colleges I'm Looking At:
- Texas A&M
- Midwestern State University
- Univ. of North Texas
- Univ. of Texas at Austin
Things I'm Lacking as of This Moment:
- PSAT/SAT Scores
- FAFSA Forms
- Precise GPA Calcs (Junior Fall semester isn’t up yet…)
I hope to volunteer some more this year and my senior year, and I'm thinking I can take a max of around 17 more college classes(?) in my high school term. In the end, what can I or should I do to continue pushing myself forwards? I feel like I’m kind of stuck right now, like I can’t do anything but sit around and wait for things to go by. In the meantime though, my online classes gave me enough time to learn coding some more 😀.
Wow! You are doing so much more than I am and kind of scaring me. One thing I will say is colleges are looking for someone who already has experience in their intended career field, and the classes that you are taking are fantastic, however, you might want to look into internships and volunteer opportunities in local tech start ups to show that you both have experience and care about your community. Best of luck!
That's a great idea! I haven't looked into internship stuff much, but now that you mention it, it could definitely give me some valuable experience! I just hope I can find something near my tiny rural town 😅.
