How to break bad studying habits?
Answered

I'm a junior and I currently have a 89.46 as my GPA, I really, really, really want to get up to a 90-95 to raise my chances of getting into the college I want to. I'm currently in a few classes and at first I was doing well but I'm not sure anymore. I feel like I struggle with procrastination and laziness and it prevents me from doing my absolute best in my classes. What should I do? I feel like I've tried everything at this point. Any advice is appreciated.

What is the name of the college you want to attend? This will help me understand a little better your situation so I can offer more personal advice :)

I'm trying to get into UC Davis because I've heard their veterinary program is extremely good.

Hi! Junior here as well! No worries I struggle with that sometimes too! It's okay! My advice is to prioritize what you need to get done in terms of assignments/homework. I personally keep a planner/a to do list of prioritized things I need to get completed the soonest (i.e. if I have an English paper due the next day and a math packet due in a week, I first work on getting the paper done and then work on a few math problems). Also, if you come across questions on your homework/assignments or need clarification, ask your teacher some questions in class and/or call up a friend. Take good notes, do your best to get a good understanding of your lessons, and be involved in class. Having a study buddy to work over with via FaceTime or in-person works well for me too! But I would caution this since it works best to work with someone you can focus well with. :) Also, if you ever fall behind for whatever reason it's best to communicate with your teachers ASAP so you can probably have a grace period to turn in assignments. Best of luck to you! <3

Hi! I'm also a junior and I have a 96.98% cumulative average so i believe I can help! For me, one of the biggest things is making connections with teachers, you don't need to be a teachers pet but maybe come to them after school and ask about clarification on something, or compliment their swearer- something to make there be a connection! I once totally failed a geometry test but since I established a connection with my teacher, she let me retake it! As far as studying goes, I learned that for most tests it is best to watch a video about the topic the test is on and write EVERYTHING down by hand, then do some practice questions! It can be the night before but you have to write it down so it sticks! If you just have trouble to start studying, make it fun! Get yourself a milkshake or fun drink after school, get in comfy clothes, light a candle, and get to work! As soon as I stopped relaxing for an hour after school and got straight to studying it made it so much easier (plus you can set a cut off time for studying, for me its after 8 i have to stop and relax)! Also split up the studying (unless its a quiz on a single unit or something), do one unit one day and the other the next. Another thing that could help is facetiming a friend and studying together- this gets you off your phone and motivated you by having a buddy, however this can also be distracting, it really depends on the friend and the material. I really hope this is helpful, I know I went a tiny bit overboard with the advice haha!

first of all, you're not alone. this stuff is harder than we get credit for LOL. I struggle so much with the same stuff you're describing, and I promise you're not lazy or stupid or anything. Lazy people don't feel awful about not being able to do their work!! Look into executive dysfunction and some strategies to help; resources for it have been really helpful for me as I have ADHD :) good luck out there

Hey,

I’ve also struggled with this problem all throughout high school but it never really affected me until junior year. I’m working on it myself so I’ll share what works for me :). I recommend using a list or an agenda to remind yourself what assignments need to be done and when. I don’t know about you but my biggest problem has always been assignments that aren’t due the next day, so work on those assignments whenever you have downtime in a class finish your test early? Do a little homework. Try and do a little each day even if it’s just a few questions push yourself do do just a few. I can’t promise you’ll get a perfect work ethic and it won’t always be easy but you just need to push yourself you sound dedicated so my best advice is just do everything to your best ability but downtime in class is the best for completing homework. Hope this helps :)
