I am so terrified to take the SAT and the ACT. How do I study for them if I don't know what I am studying for like what math and English subjects I need to work on.
Hi there!
I promise that the SAT/ACT is not as stressful as it may seem. You will have to put in a consistent amount of work, but as long as you pace yourself and don't put it off until the last minute, you will be just fine!!
Firstly, I'd set a goal for yourself. Do you want to get in the 'teens, 1400+? 1500+?
Then I'd take a diagnostic practice SAT, whether your school offers the PSAT or an online SAT via Bluebook. This will give you a good idea of where you're at and how far you need to go to reach your goal.
Some people struggle in one category more than another (you'll be able to see this in your score report after taking a diagnostic exam), and if so, there are specialized books everywhere to help you study! I used the Erica Meltzer Grammar Book and SAT Pandamath and did a lot of practice reading questions from old SATs.
Practice tests are the best way to go, in my opinion. I just took all the practice tests on the College Board website to prepare myself. There is also now an online SAT question bank available, which will be great for you to get some good practice in!
Good luck!! YOU GOT THIS!!!
I'm a senior and I've taken the Sat twice, I'm about to take my third one, but a book that really helped me was the SAT Black Book by Mike Barrett. It not only goes over the content you should study, but it explains the structure of the SAT and why it isn't like tests in school. It helped me go from an 1190 my first try to a 1290 with a brief skim of the book, I think that and the Khan academy practices recommended by collegeboard are really useful and give you the best help.
Hey there @GalaxyGrl!
I would suggest taking a practice test as a baseline for what you need to study/focus on. You can find free practice tests on the College Board website (for the SAT) or the ACT website (for the ACT). It's also possible that your school may offer a pSAT or Pre-ACT if you're in 9-11 grade currently. These tests are essentially practice/preparatory versions of the actual tests that can help you get used to the formats and testing styles.
Once you know what you need to study, look into Khan Academy's free SAT prep. They offer lessons and practice for both the math and English sections on their website. Additionally, you could purchase a prep book (with test-taking strategies, practice questions, and practice tests). I personally like the Barron's books for standardized, including the SAT, ACT, and any AP exams.
Other than that, you can look into SAT/ACT-prep courses, but they can be kind of expensive.
Good luck and happy studying!
Honestly, chill about the ACT. Honestly I think it's pretty easy and the English and reading sections are kind of just more common sense sort of questions, but from what I can remember, the science is actually the most challenging, and the math is pretty simple.
