Paying for College

Does FSA automatically receive insight of scholarships you've won from non-school based places?

For example let's say you have won a scholarship outside of the scholarships offered from colleges, when you win these types of scholarships, how is the money officially added, and how will FAFSA/FSA calculate how much student aid will they give you based on that?

Hi @caliw! I do not believe FSA will automatically know if you have won external scholarships. However, in most cases you will be asked to report any external scholarships. Whether or not that affects your financial aid offer will be dependent on how much aid you were offered, how much $ you won through the external scholarship, etc. This website details a couple of different scenarios that may be possible, so definitely check it out: https://www.mefa.org/blog/will-scholarship-affect-financial-aid

I recommend reaching out to the school's financial aid office and asking them for more information because each school may have different policies on how and when to report external scholarships.

Hope that helps!
