What kind of qualities would get a college to award a student with a full ride? I’m applying this fall and I really want to go to Spelman College. I’m hoping for a good financial aid package, more specifically, one of their full ride scholarships in order to alleviate the burden from my parents considering my sister will be starting nursing school when I start undergrad. What are some qualities that will help me achieve my goal?
The main factor that will determine your eligibility for a full ride is your financial aid profile. Most of the scholarship money that colleges award is based on the financial need of families. Every school has a different eligibility threshold, but generally, a student from family of four with a household income over $100,000 per year will not receive a full ride based on need. A smaller financial aid award is certainly possible for such families though. In any case, colleges will take the cost of your sister's nursing school into account when determining your aid package.
A student could receive a full ride based on merit regardless of their family's financials. Merit scholarships, or merit aid, are awarded to applicants through the regular admissions process, and usually no additional application is required to be in the running for one. There are many different types of merit that could make you eligible for a merit scholarship, including top academic performance, exceptional extracurricular achievement, diversity, and a unique personal story. Hope this helps!
