I’m a sophomore and my dream school is USC. It’s common knowledge that USC is extremely expensive, and the only way I’d probably be able to attend is with scholarships or financial aid. But I’m wondering if I’d qualify for financial aid because of my circumstances. My mother passed away a couple of months back and I currently live with my aunt. I’m not sure how much my aunt makes, but she lives in nice home and has a well paying job. I’m just wondering if in a situation like this would a student be qualified for financial aid?
Your situation may make you qualified for merit aid, which is not tied to your financial situation. If you explain how your mother's passing has affected you in the Additional Information section, USC will take your circumstances into account.
You may still be eligible for need-based financial aid as well. USC does not consider home equity in aid calculations, so your aunt's nice home will not inflate your asset value. USC's income threshold for aid is also fairly high - students whose families make less than $80,000 per year are not charged any tuition, and families earning incomes below $200,000 may still receive some aid.
Hope this helps!
