Paying for College

California Residency
Answered

Hi, I am currently a High School Junior in Tennessee. I am hoping to apply to some UCs and Cal Poly. My mom is originally from California and is hoping to move with me if I get into one of these schools. If I am still her dependent, and she establishes residency at that time, will I qualify for in-state tuition the following year? I know if just the student moves they don't but my mom would be permanently relocating to California as well. Thanks!

Yes, you could qualify for in-state tuition the following year. Something important to consider is that the UCs have unique residency requirements to qualify for in-state tuition: a parent must maintain a one year physical presence in California with intent to remain in the state. This means that if you apply to the UCs by the deadline of Nov 30, 2024, your mom would need to move to CA by Nov 29, 2023 in order to become a resident by the time you apply. Hope this helps!
