Paying for College

Please Help! - Good university vs Okay/bad university

I'm applying to several universities right now, and I found out that I could be considered for a full-ride scholarship at the University. But if I apply for that, I would be expected to go to that University because I would be wasting a spot someone else could've potentially got (at least that's what my counselor said). However, that University is about 4-5 hours away from my house (I would prefer not staying at a dorm), and it's not a good university. The other school (public Ivy runner-up) that I really want to attend is really close to my house but I probably wouldn't get much scholarship (my family is in the upper middle class but can't pay for the tuition).

Which one should I apply for if money is the problem here? Is it better to not be in debt and graduate from a good university?

For your information, the good university is UW-Seattle and the other one is Washington State University.

Hello! Fellow Washingtonian here as well :)

I'd recommend you try to find the data of the average's UW graduate's starting salary. If it's high enough to pay of your potential debt, then go to UW.

Also, what major are you doing? I know UW has a really good comp sci program, if you're majoring in that and passionate about it, then go to UW.

In my opinion you should apply to both and show the other school how much aid you got. You wouldn't be taking someones spot because if you decided not to attend it would be offered to someone else.
