Is mechanical engineering a good major to go into if you are interested in architecture?
Yes, because you'll want food on the table and support a family.
The life of an architect is not as glamorous as you may think. It is perhaps one of the most unstable jobs out there because (as in 2008), once people stop buying homes new ones aren't coming up, so architects are one of the first out the door.
Notable architect Malcolm Fraser liquidated his company in 2015 because he went broke. Moreover, it takes an average of 11 years to become an architect, on par with some doctor specialties.
To become an architect, you must have a degree in architecture. https://newschoolarch.edu/blog/how-long-does-it-take-to-become-an-architect/
