Hi all,
Rising senior here -
Not exactly sure where I should 'aim' for, and if the Ivy League (+ LACs with similar acceptance rates) is even within my playing field. I hope this doesn't count as a Chance Me, since CV's engine doesn't do much to answer it.
I have great grades, the hardest courseload at my school, and a 1550+ SAT. I feel like my essays could stand out with some editing, and I've handpicked a few solid recommenders.
However, even though I have things on my activities list it feels like I've mostly spent high school doing nothing noteworthy, which wouldn't be inaccurate. I don't have much to show for any of my hobbies and only have one debatably prestigious international award from the New York Times while everything else is regional, and all my activites are fairly run-of-the-mill (a club presidency, a part-time job, being an intermediate-advanced instrumentalist, playing a sport but in the lowest provincial division...). I've never competed for anything on a national or international level.
Do I even bother shooting high, or am I just setting myself up for disappointment?
(For context, I am an international student, so my "match" and "safety" schools would both be almost-guaranteed admissions to my country's institutions, which heavily weigh grades, and I would not be upset about that but it's nice to nurse a pipe dream)
Hi, @serotonin. The Ivies and colleges with similar acceptance rates will be Reach schools--as they are for nearly every student--but that does not mean you have no chance or should not apply. As competitive as these colleges are, they have holistic admissions, so in select cases, your stellar stats, essays, and LOR can compensate for ECs which are not the strongest; you would need to make it obvious that you would be an excellent fit at that college, that you would have much more to contribute than the average applicant. Plus, I have a feeling your ECs might be stronger than you realize; any international award is Tier 1 (Exceptional), a club presidency would be Tier 2 (Very Strong), and your accomplishments on the instrument may very well put you into Tier 3 (Strong) or even Tier 2 category. Even a part-time job could be a valuable asset if it is a significant time commitment.
You're not setting your self up for dissapointment. Especially with Ivy League schools it's good to try and see if you'll make it. I'm not an admissions officer of course, but as long as you're passionate about those activites, I think you'll be fine. Remember, trying your best with grades and activites will pay off. Overall, with what you've provided above is actually really good and will defintiley help with your application.
Hope this helps!
