My dream would be to become an ophthalmologist but I don't know if I can get into a good enough college to pursue that. I'm only in sophomore year and I'm getting A's with the occasional B now, but I wasn't in the best place freshmen year so I finished with a 3.0 GPA. I don't know if I can come back from that, and I just feel like I've ruined my life bombing freshmen year. The medical field is so competitive that I'm on the verge of pursuing something else. I don't think I can get into a good college even if I bring my GPA up a bit. Is there any way to get it up to like a 3.7?
Hey there @kat_!
While it may be hard to bring your unweighted GPA up to a 3.7 before you graduate, you could bring up your weighted GPA by taking more honors and AP/IB courses in the future. Also, as @bubblegum17 said, a lot of colleges put less emphasis on your freshman year grades because they understand that you're new to high school and that it's a huge change from middle school. For now, focus on getting the best grades you can in the most challenging classes that you can take, getting good test scores, obtaining excellent recommendation letters in a few years, having well-rounded extracurriculars, and writing stellar college essays.
Don't stress yourself out over your low freshman year grades-- some schools won't consider those grades at all. Good luck!
Hi Kat, many schools place very little importance on freshman year as you are still adjusting to being in high school. Admission's officers also love a student that improves as they go on during school. Also, writing an additional essay could show your resilience in how you got through that bad time in your life. As long as you keep it up, you should be able to get into many colleges. The most important thing is getting the degree, not where it comes from. Continue to pursue your dream!
