Hi. I am a South African 18 year old that just recently graduated from highschool and am interested in doing pre med (biology specifically) in the us. Are there any universities that anyone may know if that would be more willing to accept an applicant from outside the country?
An explanation of the gpa system would also be highly appreciated.
Thanks
For top colleges and universities for pre meds are
UC Berkeley
UCLA
NYU
Emory
Tufts
CMU
Cornell
Dartmouth
Brown
UChicago
Johns Hopkins
Rice
Northwestern
Stanford
Columbia
Princeton
Harvard
UPENN
Yale
Duke
These are just some colleges and universities that are good, there are much more.
For the GPA system, there can be some types of ways to calculate it, generally speaking, this is how you calculate on 4.0 scale
97-100 = A+ 4.0
93-96 = A 4.0
90-92 = A- 3.7
87-89 = B+ 3.3
83-86 = B 3.0
80-82 = B- 2.7
77-79 = C+ 2.3
73-76 = C 2.0
70-72 = C- 1.7
67 - 69 = D+ 1.3
65-66 = D 1.0
Anything lower is F
There could also be another way (my school uses this) but the other way I showed you is more common.
90-100 A 4.0
80-89 B 3.0
70-79 C 2.0
Anything lower than 69 is a F.
I hope this helps! Good luck coming to the US!
Thank you so much.
In south africa, the graduation marks are based on a final exam taken at the end of the year. Does the gpa system work the same way, or are there other factors that come into play because I also see things I'm not familiar with like thing about credits and others talking about courses/coursework (here we only have distinct subjects eg math, english, physics, accounting) and 9th-11th grade transcripts.
GPA is calculated as an average of the grades of all the classes you have taken in your time in 9th-12th grades. That GPA is then factored into a class rank.
