- Hoping to major in Biomedical Engineering, but its such a niche, that many schools don't offer it as a major, some not even as a minor..
- tons of extracurriculars, several D3 and a couple D2 offers for cross country (and track), willing to run collegiately D2 or D3 if i receive additional scholarships
- got accepted into Cornell University's CURIE high school outreach program (somewhat prestigious, 1/50 slots out of hundreds of applicants)
- I am hoping to apply to graduate after college at a high ranking schools (CalTech as a reach) I have a 4.0 GPA but am not valedictorian or salutatorian
- really can't afford more than 25k/yr tuition
so should I prioritize going to a school that offers biomedical engineering as a major, (like even CO School of mines only has it as a minor)? Any steps I can do to increase my admission chances (I'm planning on retaking the SAT as I didn't even get 1400)
I was also thinking of a private Christian university such as Point Loma Nazarene or Biola, but would that set me up for failure?
Don't forget that the most elite schools also have the most scholarship aid, so they can meet your financial need (and you don't have to be valedictorian! ) It's ok not to have a bioengineering major but you should look for strong STEM and engineering programs with a variety of opportunities, not just a few classes offered in a biology major but a wide array of related choices. Private christian schools may have much less depth of course offerings in Bio and Engineering, larger research universities will have many more, a larger community of students who share your interests (and you can find a faith community/club to support you while you are there.) Use every resource the CURIE program gives you to help with your college search! They will likely help answer some of these questions and will offer outstanding advice and support.
How about a State school, the education they provide is great and it is very easily affordable. I would look for a school offering it as a major as I am sure there are plenty.
The University of Tulsa has a minor in Biomedical Engineering.
Niche.com allows you to search colleges and put Biomedical Engineering in the majors slot.
You have a very high GPA, so that will help a lot. I think that if you really want to study biomedical engineering, then you should try to prioritize a college that has that major. If you have another major you are interested in, then maybe let biological engineering be a minor. I'd advise that you try to research you're desired major and see if there is a related major that you'd also enjoy. Continue to develop you're interests and hobbies, and maybe they'll be another major that you realize that you'd be passionate about.
Also, I will say that attending a private Christian university is not going to set you up for failure. Christian colleges often have a lot of scholarship options, most having a scholarship for just going to the campus and touring. Biola has a lot of scholarship options, so within the college website, research their scholarship options. Consider contacting the admissions office also of various colleges for information.
Get solidified and tailored advise from your school counselor, parents, guardian, trusted adult, and/or CollegeVine advisors. They will be able to see the whole picture better than I can.
Hope that helps! Good luck!
