I am a Junior in high school but I am planning ahead! I have been looking for colleges since 8th grade. First, I thought of Atlanta because that's originally where I wanted to go but there is this app I discovered called Niche.com. I'm sure plenty are familiar with it. For those who aren't,It's another app similar to this one where you look up a college you want maybe consider and apply for it. You can also see your chances of getting in,see the costs, see the University report card (how the University is rated as a whole like... rating the safety of the campus, the diversity,dorms...) I looked up Atlanta colleges but the only concern is the safety. I'm sure you guys have heard of Clark Atlanta (CAU) located in Atlanta,Georgia. This wasn't my first choice but it was my 3rd or 4th. I was looking at the background history of Clark Atlanta. It was great! The only issue that caught my eye was the safety. There are reviews back from 2012-now on Niche about The campus. Mostly complaining about internet, parking tickets, speed limits, strict rules but lazy professors somewhat. Positive side review states, "Clark Atlanta is a private, Methodist university located in Atlanta, Georgia. As a historically black college, CAU has a strong history of and commitment to the education of black Americans. It is a small institution with an enrollment of 3,257 undergraduate students. Admissions is fairly competitive as the Clark Atlanta acceptance rate is 56%. Popular majors include Radio and Television, Business, and Psychology. Graduating 46% of students, Clark Atlanta alumni go on to earn a starting salary of $26,700". They have 461 Excellent reviews,600 very good reviews,765 average reviews,201 poor reviews, and 91 terrible reviews. As for my top Universities, which is F.I.T. or UCLA are very well known. UCLA is an elite public university located in Los Angeles, California. It is a large institution with an enrollment of 31,763 undergraduate students. Admissions is extremely competitive as the UCLA acceptance rate is only 9%. Popular majors include Economics, Sociology, and Political Science and Government. Graduating 92% of students, UCLA alumni go on to earn a starting salary of $44,500. California residents are eligible for admission to the University of California with a 3.0 grade-point average; nonresidents are eligible with a 3.4 GPA. I have a 3.5 gpa at the moment but on Niche it shows more so rejected people because UCLA is a well known Public college and they are looking for well skilled people with motive talents. F.I.T. FIT is a highly rated public college located in Manhattan, New York in the New York City Area. It is a mid-size institution with an enrollment of 6,885 undergraduate students. Admissions is fairly competitive as the FIT acceptance rate is 53%. Popular majors include Fashion and Apparel Merchandising, Communications, and Fashion and Apparel Design. Graduating 83% of students, FIT alumni go on to earn a starting salary of $43,200. But what I am noticing is that their overall niche grade is A- which is unusual because its suppose to be the best college in New York beside NYU. The safety is A-,party scene is B-,Athletics is a D-,and the dorms are a C. I'll take it in consideration for now. As for Otis college of Art and Design, Otis College undergraduate programs feature immersive first-year Foundation courses, an expansive Liberal Arts and Sciences curriculum, and a Creative Action Integrated Learning program that introduces social and environmental issues affecting creative disciplines. Our majors include Animation, Fashion Design, Fine Arts, Game and Entertainment Design, Graphic Design, Illustration, Product Design and Toy Design. To customize your studies there are also 13 minors, including Entrepreneurship, Sustainability and Concept Art. We prepare you for a thriving career that capitalizes on your unique point of view. Otis has a 96% employment rate with students working in a variety of creative disciplines. Our industry centered Career Services department prepares students for internships and jobs in LA's creative economy and you can use their services for life. I am considering because their campus is a C and most thing are A- and C- or c's. I might consider Fashion Institute of design and Merchandising located In Los Angeles California. Fashion Institute of design and Merchandising is a for-profit college located in Los Angeles, California. It is a small institution with an enrollment of 1,365 undergraduate students. Admissions is fairly competitive as the FIDM Los Angeles acceptance rate is 42%. Popular majors include Business Support Services, Fashion and Apparel Merchandising, and Fashion and Apparel Design. Graduating 75% of students, FIDM Los Angeles alumni go on to earn a starting salary of $33,900. I chose colleges not far from home, but if you have any recommendations, please comment below!
Hey there!
It's great that you are planning ahead. I did it myself and now I have clear goals to work towards.
I have looked at Niche's grading system, too, but ultimately, YOU are the one to decide what school is best for you regardless of the grade. For example, the school I want to attend (Delaware Valley University) has a grade of C. My other options (Penn State University Park and Temple University) have grades of A and A-. Why do I prefer DelVal? It fit my needs and has a great program that will provide the exact training I want. I was a little put off at first by it being a C, but I did more research and found that it appealed to me more than the others. I thoroughly went through the major's information on each website, including coursework, videos, and pictures. I also got a tour at DelVal. Sure, they have their issues, but so does every other college. Also, though they are not a overly challenging school, that's fine because I am not going for an academic challenge, I am going for hands-on horticulture training which is their specialty. I liked the campus atmosphere, too, though I will be cautious, but you really shouldn't be walking alone in the dark no matter how safe your campus is graded as!
So instead of competitiveness or Niche grades, make sure you find the college that excites you and will fit you best. Of course, you do need to balance that with the stats on job placement after graduation and salaries, and all that stuff, but you need to make sure you're going to attend a college you like and that will provide opportunities that will help you.
Hope this helps and lmk if you need any more advice.
You must be a senior and thank you for that valid information.
You're welcome! Yes, absolutely a senior, lol :)
I actually do need more advice.Which would you suggest/Otis design and art accepted my connection. But I want to consider Spelman or Ucla. But UCLA is so hard to get into
I think you should apply to all of them. You should really apply to several schools anyway to make sure you have options if some don't accept you. In the meantime, research all three schools and if you prefer 1 and you get accepted, then there you go! I don't know much about fashion design so I can not give you a good suggestion on which to choose.
You must not live far from the one you're attending.
Nope, I will have a 10-20 minute commute! Very convenient :)
lucky :( I'm 5 hours away from the ones I want to attend except for Baton Rouge. I live about an hour from there.
I guess that means you are leaning towards living on campus?
either that or an apartment
Aren't dorms more expensive?
Depends on the area of the college and if apartments are in high demand. You have to compare the dorm cost vs. costs of apartments near the campus. Sometimes I hear apartments are more expensive unless you rent a house with 3-5 other students to divide the rent.
It was nice talking to you.Would you mind following you me? I cant follow you bc it doesn't give me the option
Sure! Nice talking to you, too :)
Ok,nice talking to you too? Are u a boy or girl?My guess is a boy
Actually, I am 100% girl :) The name Jael is Hebrew (tho I am not Jewish) and often confused with Joel, so no worries, I'm used to it. My parents picked very unique names. Oh and just so you know, "following" you works differently here on CV then on social media...I will only see updates to this discussion you posted. I will probably not get notifications when you post another post. But I will keep my eyes out and you can try tagging me in it (@Jael_S238)
I don't know how/is there a search bar where I can type in usernames and follow people? I would follow you but I cant unless u post on the juniors thing
No, there's no way to easily follow someone, unfortunately.
Yeah....well if I see you on the junior board I will Most DEFINITELY follow you.You seem cool.Like VERY!
Aww, thanks :)
Don't tell my other friends. 🤫
Sure, I can be your secret senior mentor/friend :)
ok... so where are you from?
I live in PA near Philadelphia. Homeschooled! How about you?
I live in Lafayette Louisiana. You know, near New Orleans and stuff...I go to public school.By drive,we are 19 hours and 48 minutes away. By plane,we are 4 hours and 45 minutes.
That's a neat place to live!
Just wanted to warn you that eventually, the website will prevent us from commenting back and forth...there seems to be a limit on how many comments you can have on a thread. So if I don't respond, don't feel that I am ignoring you :)
Oh...well that's weird.Yeah,it is...the Southside is pretty quiet. Is it bad in Philly?I heard they had good pizza. 🤤
I live a 1/2 hour to an hour outside of Philly, but there are definitely a lot of great pizza places around! Every place is different.
Oh ok,that's nice.Where I live isn't far from New Orleans and Baton Rouge and stuff. Our donut place is GREAT out here in Lafayette.Lots of sugar.I don't like Krispy Kreme donuts. They taste plain.

Sounds great :) I am a sucker for sweets...especially donuts! A popular donut place around here is Yum Yums. I have no idea if that's a local chain or if you can find Yum Yums in other states.
We have a place called Meches donuts.SOOO good. All kinds of donuts and king cakes and etc
Sounds delicious! What kind of hobbies do you have?
WOW!Its been so long,I thought they cut off our communication. I like jump roping and running.I don't do extracurricular activities
Sorry about that...I was sick and barely staying on top of school due to being a DE student. Jump roping is great exercise! Can you do any jump rope tricks like crossing your feet? I have a LOT of hobbies but my three biggest are gardening, floral design, and helping families with cute kids :) If you don't mind me asking, is there a reason you don't do ECs?
I am ashamed, and I have stage fright.Ive been told I'd be a great singer or maybe a basketball player but if I do basketball I'd feel like I wouldn't do it right and be the reason why the team loses. With singing,I have stage fright and I am shy.
Don't be ashamed! Guess what? I started playing volleyball for the first time summer before junior year. Not with a school (I'm homeschooled) but with a local church team. It was SO hard and I was really bad, but I stuck to it, did what the coaches said, and I have no regrets. I am so glad I did, even tho it was embarrassing at times. Maybe you aren't able to join the school team, but is there a club you can play with? You could always express interest to a coach and then find out if there's things you can do to build towards playing. I still don't play as a main part of the main vball "team", but I am progressing and enjoying it and that's what matters. Don't be afraid to take a chance and try. There's no shame in doing your best! If it matters to you, you will stick with it at all costs and eventually reach your goal. Starting is always the roughest part, but if you push through the initial pressure, it can be fun! My advice is to find an EC you can begin, not just because it matters in the college application, but it also helps you do better and focus better in studies. Maybe it's something totally different than singing or basketball, but as long as you are passionate about it, it will be worth it! I hope that is helpful :)
I'm jumpstart as well and thanks for the confidence.I wanna do so much with my life.
College vine has been spamming my email lol.I have 19 connection requests
No problem! You have to start somewhere, and often it's from the ground up. But hey, in order to jump high, you gotta get low!
Same :) I ignore and trash them because I already know where I want to go and the major I am going for is not offered by many schools. I have also heard that they don't always work, so I steer clear of them.
Lol.I'm not sure where I wanna go yet...
That's okay, too! If you know what you want to major in, that can help you decide. A lot of schools do not have the major I want, so I check their offered majors and ignore them/unsubscribe if they don't have it.
Yeah..they're spamming my school email
Hi, I enjoy chatting with you here, but I want to ask you to message me here on your own question versus other people's unless you have advice to add, of course. I just want to respect other people's question spaces. Thanks :)
um okay.I am having trouble with business math
Is business math a class you are taking?
yeah,in high school.
I see. I recommend asking the teacher if they recommend any supplemental materials. Or another good option can be finding a student in the class or who has taken the class and ask for some peer tutoring or even just advice on studying for the class. Never hurts to ask!
You are correct!Sorry if I don't respond right away,I am doing it off of the school computer and I sometimes have work I need to catch up on or do.
No problem!
I am very curious. How did you get into fashion design? If it's a hobby you have, what do you do? I am also a designer...but a floral designer!
I have a thing for clothes.I have a sewing machine at home but I need to know how to navigate it.
That's fun. I bet you enjoy mixing and matching outfits each day :) I enjoy it myself. My mom calls me the fashion police in our house, lol. I handsew but it would be really cool to learn how to use a sewing machine!
Fashion police, lol. When you're clothes are in trouble, just fly for help.😂
hi
Hello, how's everything going?
Going great so far,the first nine weeks is over!I have good grades, but the only bad grade I have is Principles of business (dealing with customer service) and I have a D in there but I can pick it up because the last day to put grades in is tomorrow and all I have to do is retake Chapter 1 exam.
I now have a 3.2 gpa
Neat! I'm sorry, I don't think you told me what your GPA originally was.
I got back my Oct SAT score today...I got a 1440! I am officially retiring from SATs, lol :)
THATS AMAZING,JAEL.I am VERY happy for you! I can't believe they are still allowing us to chat off of here. :)
Thanks!
I know :)
Lol...How long have you been on this app and how'd you find or discover it?
I stumbled upon Collegevine last October through an external scholarship website. I entered the CV scholarship and then saw all the great resources they had collected here. Then, I noticed how many questions were going unanswered or if they were answered, not thoroughly and not in a manner that was personally helpful for the student. So I began doing that in my free time, and on weekends I enjoyed doing the peer essay review.
That's nice.Very interesting.I might think on going to college for forensics as well
So are you trying to decide between fashion and forensics or are you interested in double majoring?
I recently found out that besides majoring in horticulture, I could get certified in horticulture therapy! I might just do that because I love using flowers/gardening as a way to connect with people.
That's nice.I cant do therapy,I get impatient and frustrated real fast.
Isn't that reviving plants?I never knew what horticulture was until I look it up?
Horticulture is the art of gardening, so I will study floral design, greenhouse management, propagation from leaves, growing fruit, hydroponics, soil, pest control, etc. I may end up interning for seed companies, botanical gardens, nurseries, and farms. Horticulture therapy is a form of therapy for people that uses gardening and plants as a way to recover or help with emotions.
Oh ok,that's nice.I found it a little weird at first but people like what they like.I'm thinking on forensic science with criminal justice system or Fashion design to get my Bachelor's degree (BFA or BA)
hi
Hey, how's everything going?
I am swamped with college applications and DE classes...
