Business Economics or Economics Major at UCLA

Hello! This coming school year I will be in 11th grade and was wondering if any business economics/economics students at UCLA have any admissions/high school advice. I would like to apply for either one of those majors and was hoping someone could share what courses and extracurriculars they did in high school.

Hi @cvaladez.2024,

At the high school level, there probably isn't too much you can do extracurricular-wise to differentiate your profile towards one of these majors.

For both majors, you start in the pre-major and have to re-apply after taking the pre-requisite courses. For Bus Econ, you'll have to complete all pre-major courses with a 3.0 minimum GPA and a C or higher in each course. For the Econ major, you only need to complete the pre-reqs with a 2.5 GPA and a C or higher in each course.

Once you're in undergrad you can apply for Bus Econ or Econ whether you're a pre-Bus Econ and a pre-Econ major, though, so choosing one or the other on your application doesn't make too much of a difference and you can decide again once you're already in college. I'd look into the course requirements for each and see which appeals to you more, and explain your choice either overtly or subtly through the values you showcase in your essays.

Hope this helps!

Best,

Priya
