Can anyone explain the NYU grading system?

I've been looking into NYU a lot lately and something that's got me a bit puzzled is their grading system. How exactly does it work? Is it a standard 4.0 scale, or something different?

NYU uses a fairly standard GPA scale, which ranges from 0.0 to 4.0. The scale corresponds to letter grades, with a 4.0 equivalent to an 'A', a 3.0 as a 'B', and a 2.0 as a 'C'.

The university also uses plus and minus designations, which slightly alter these values. An A+ grade is still a 4.0, but an A- grade counts as a 3.7. Similarly, a B+ is a 3.3, a B is a 3.0, and a B- is a 2.7. This trend continues down through the 'C' and 'D' grades.

Failing a course is recorded as an 'F', which counts as a 0.0 GPA. However, NYU students can also receive a grade of 'WF', which means a withdrawal while failing. This also counts as a 0.0 and can affect the student's academic standing.

NYU also has a couple of non-letter grading options. The 'P' grade stands for "Pass" in a pass/fail course and does not impact the GPA. The 'W' grade stands for "Withdrawal" and implies withdrawing from a course without it impacting your GPA.

Keep in mind that failing courses, withdrawing from courses, or opting for pass/fail can still impact things such as financial aid eligibility and academic progress, so it's essential to consider those aspects as well. Always connect with your academic advisor if you're unsure about any of these elements.
