Hello all, I'm really interested in military colleges in NJ! However, I'm not familiar with my options. Anybody got details on what colleges I should be considering, and any insight on what the application process entails?
Hello! When considering military colleges in New Jersey, there are a couple of prominent choices that come to mind.
Although, New Jersey does not have a dedicated military academy like West Point, it does have the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) which houses the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) for the Army and Air Force. The Rutgers University also provides Army and Air Force ROTC programs and additionally, an Navy ROTC program.
The ROTC programs at these colleges prepare students for service in the military while they complete their degree. Meeting academic standards, physical fitness standards, and committing to serve in the military after graduation are general requirements for these programs.
Specifically for NJIT and Rutgers, ROTC students can pursue any major while participating in the military training program. Upon graduation, they commission as officers in their chosen branch of service.
If you're looking at these colleges, the application process would involve applying to the institution itself, which would require submitting transcripts, SAT/ACT scores (unless the school is test-optional), essays, and letter(s) of recommendation. Additionally, you would apply to the ROTC program which may require a separate application along with a physical fitness test and an interview.
Remember that it's a commitment, not just an extracurricular, and you should only consider it if you are interested in a military career post-graduation. It's recommended to research the colleges and their ROTC programs further to see if it aligns well with your career goals. Good luck as you explore these options!
