Listing my race on the Common App - thoughts on self-identification?

Hey y'all, currently filling out the Common App and pondering whether I should put down my race or just tick the 'Prefer not to say' box. Does identifying my race make any difference in the admissions process? Any insight would be great!

Hello there! It's a thought-provoking question that many applicants have. The information regarding your race on the Common App is entirely voluntary, and you should feel comfortable with whatever decision you make. If you choose to identify your race, it can help admissions officers view your achievements and experiences within the context of your background, which can be an important aspect of your identity and how you might contribute to the diversity of the campus community.

It's also worth noting that some colleges may use racial and ethnic data for scholarship considerations or to support diversity initiatives. On the other hand, if you are uncomfortable sharing this information, it will not count against you in the admissions process. Admissions committees aim to assess applications holistically and will respect your decision to withhold such information if you prefer not to disclose it. The most important thing is that you fill out your application in a way that feels right to you. Good luck with your application!
