Going to College After Serving in the Military?

Do most people go to college after serving in the military? I'm trying to plan my path and I'm not sure if college before or after the military is the way to go. Would love some insight from those who've been there.

Both paths - enrolling in college before or after serving in the military - can have their own unique advantages.

Many individuals do choose to pursue higher education after their military service, utilizing benefits from programs such as the Post-9/11 GI Bill, which helps cover tuition and fees, provides a monthly housing allowance, and offers a stipend for books and supplies for up to 36 months. This can be a great way to transition back into civilian life and acquire new skills or qualifications.

On the other hand, joining the military before college could limit flexibility in terms of when and how you can pursue a degree. Service commitments often require you to postpone your education.

There's also the ROTC (Reserve Officers Training Corps) programs offered by many colleges, which allow you to complete your degree first. Once you graduate, you enter the military as an officer.

Another thing to consider is that the military offers many vocational training and job opportunities that can establish a foundation for a career without necessarily needing a traditional college degree. For instance, if you're interested in a technology or engineering-focused career, serving in a military capacity related to these fields can provide you with hands-on experience and potentially some college credits.
