Will Going to College Get Me Out of Military Service?

I'm currently enlisted but considering going back to school. Would this exempt me from service or are there alternative paths to take?

The decision to continue your education and join college while enlisted can indeed coexist, and it doesn't necessarily exempt you from military service. Here's how it happens:

The military values education and provides numerous options and benefits for its service members to go to school. For example, under the Post-9/11 GI Bill, you might receive full tuition and fees, a monthly housing allowance, and a stipend for books and supplies. This makes it possible to attend college while serving, without having to leave the military.

Additionally, some service members might attend school part-time while serving, and others might use the military's tuition assistance program to pay for their education. There are also schools that offer special programs for military personnel.

If you're thinking of transitioning out of the military to attend school full-time, you might still have service obligations to meet depending on your enlistment contract. For some, this might include serving in the reserves while attending school.

Also, if you're looking for educational opportunities without leaving the service, you could consider officer candidate school (OCS) or ROTC programs, as they provide educational and leadership training. Through OCS or ROTC, service members can earn a degree and commission as an officer.

Remember to consult with your unit leadership or education services officer before making any decisions, as they can provide you with detail specific to your case.
