What college classes are beneficial to take during high school?

I have the opportunity to take some college classes at my local community college while still in high school. Which ones would boost my college app? Are there specific subjects that look better than others, or does it not really matter as long as I'm taking college-level courses?

It's great to hear that you're considering taking college classes while still in high school! This can demonstrate your willingness to challenge yourself academically, which is something colleges look for. In terms of which classes to take, it often looks impressive if you select courses that both interest you and align with your intended major or field of study. For instance, if you're aiming for a career in engineering, taking higher-level math or science courses can be beneficial.

Additionally, courses that develop writing and critical thinking skills are valuable regardless of your field of interest, as these skills are universally sought after. Examples include courses in English composition, history, and social sciences. However, the rigor of the courses also matters. Advanced courses in any subject area, such as honors or college-level classes, can demonstrate your readiness for college-level work.

Don't forget to consider the balance of your overall workload. It's important to excel in the courses you're taking, so be mindful not to overextend yourself. A well-performed college course is better than a poorly-performed one, even if it's in a 'more impressive' subject. Lastly, ensure that you can handle these courses without neglecting your high school curriculum, which should remain your priority. If you manage your time well and choose courses wisely, these community college classes can be an excellent addition to your college application and preparation for higher education. Good luck!
