What does my 1240 PSAT score indicate for my future SAT?

Hey everyone, I'm a bit confused and could use some advice. I recently got my PSAT scores back and I have a 1240. I'm not sure how to interpret this in terms of my potential for the SAT. Is this a good starting point? Also, how can I use this score to gauge which colleges might be within reach?

Hi there! A 1240 is a solid starting point for your PSAT, and it gives you a good idea of where you are before you begin preparing for the SAT. Typically, students score slightly higher on the SAT than the PSAT, so with some dedicated preparation, you could see an improvement in your SAT score. To get a rough estimate of your corresponding SAT score, you can add about 40 points to your PSAT score. However, different students improve in different ways, so consider this a general guideline rather than a prediction.

As for college reach, you’ll want to look at the middle 50% of SAT scores for admitted students at the colleges you’re interested in. This will give you a sense of what scores they typically accept. Remember, SAT scores are just one part of your application, and many colleges also value strong essays, recommendations, and extracurricular involvement. Keep up the good work and good luck with your test prep!
