Should I be concerned about standardized test scores for college admissions?

Hey folks – with the whole test-optional movement, I'm a little stressed about whether or not I should focus on the SAT/ACT. Do you guys think colleges should require standardized test scores for admissions, and how much of an edge does it actually give you in the process?

Hey there! I totally understand your dilemma; my child just went through the college admissions process not too long ago. Regarding standardized tests, many colleges are test-optional now, which means it's up to you to decide if you want to submit your SAT/ACT scores. In my child’s experience, and from what we’ve learned, submitting a strong SAT/ACT score can still be beneficial and give you an edge, especially at competitive institutions. It provides an additional data point for admissions officers to assess your academic readiness.

However, if you don’t feel that your test scores accurately reflect your capabilities or if they aren't in line with the average scores at your target schools, it may be better to leave them out. You could then focus on other parts of your application like your transcript, essays, and extracurricular activities, which are crucial aspects as well.

For example, my child’s SAT score was within the higher range for the schools they applied to, so we decided to include it, which we believe helped in the admissions process. But another friend’s child, who didn’t perform as well on standardized tests, opted out and still got into a great college based on their strong GPA and extracurricular achievements. Ultimately, it’s about presenting the best and most authentic version of yourself in your applications. Good luck!
