Are weightlifting classes in high school beneficial for college apps?

I've got space for an elective and I'm thinking of taking a weightlifting class to stay active. Do you think this sort of class adds anything to a college application, or should I focus on more academic electives?

Hello there! It's great to hear that you're being thoughtful about your course selection. Taking a weightlifting class can indicate to colleges that you're interested in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, which is certainly a positive.

However, it likely won't carry the same weight as an academic elective in the college admissions process. If you have the opportunity to take and excel in a more academically rigorous class, that might be more beneficial, especially if it aligns with your intended major or academic interests.

That said, if you're already taking a number of challenging courses and you're looking for balance, it's absolutely okay to take something that personally interests you, like weightlifting. Balance is important, and colleges do appreciate students who are well-rounded in the sense of managing their wellness in addition to their academic pursuits. The most important thing is to excel in the courses you do take and show your commitment and passion through your chosen activities.

Good luck!
