Best College Major for Pre-Med Students

Bit of a pickle, aiming to get into medical school. Any advice on what the optimal college major could be? It's a tough decision and I'm grateful for any guidance!

While the majority of pre-med students major in biological or physical sciences, you should know that medical schools do not require a specific major. What they are considerably interested in is your GPA, science GPA, and MCAT scores, among other things.

It's important to choose a major that aligns with your interests, and where you feel you can excel to maintain a high GPA. After all, you don't want to major in biology simply because it's common for pre-med tracks, and then struggle with the coursework and end up with a lower GPA.

Whenever you select your major, keep in mind that you'll still have to fulfill your pre-med prerequisites like Biology, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Physics, and probably a few others depending on the medical schools you are interested in.

Interestingly, some research suggests that students who major in humanities, math, or statistics may have higher acceptance rates to medical schools compared to those who major in the sciences. This is not to say that these majors will give you a "leg up" but they might offer you a unique perspective and a broader range of skills that could serve you well in medical school and beyond.

For example, majoring in psychology could broaden your understanding of human behavior or majoring in a foreign language might give you an advantage when working with a diverse patient population. In summary, choose a major where you can excel and that also interests you rather than what's traditionally considered a pre-med major.
