Seeking Advise for History Programs in Virginia

Hey everyone, I'm a junior and I've decided to major in History. I'm looking to stay in Virginia. I'd really appreciate it if I could get some suggestions on the best colleges for history majors in this state.

In Virginia, you have a number of solid choices for studying history as your major.

The University of Virginia (UVA) in Charlottesville has a well-regarded history department. At UVA, you can study history from a wide range of perspectives and time periods - from ancient Roman history to contemporary American history, and everything in between. You have the option to concentrate in one specific geographical area, or to select courses that cover different parts of the world, giving you a global overview of history.

William & Mary, in Williamsburg, is another excellent choice. Its rich history (it's the second oldest college in the country, founded in 1693) provides a unique backdrop for your studies. The school is known for its interactive and experiential learning opportunities. For instance, you could participate in the Historic Triangle Collaborative where you'll work with local institutions on a project related to local heritage.

Virginia Tech (VT) is also a good option, especially if you have interests in the intersections of history with science and technology. The history faculty at VT have diverse areas of specialization, which can help you gain a multifaceted understanding of the discipline.

James Madison University (JMU) in Harrisonburg offers interesting concentrations within the history major, including Public History (for students interested in working in museums, historical societies, etc) and secondary education social studies.

Lastly, the University of Richmond offers small class sizes and extensive research opportunities. They also have a range of history courses and often host guest lecturers who are renowned historians in their fields.

Remember, when choosing a school, you should definitely consider factors beyond the program itself. These can include the overall campus culture, financial aid options, location, size, and extracurricular opportunities. Consider making visits to the campuses of these universities (if possible) to get a feel of what it's like to be a student there. Best of luck with your college search!
