Hey everyone, I'm really leaning towards a career in customer service after college. I know it may come off as unconventional given that many people are shooting for STEM or Business, but that's not the path for me, and I really enjoy interacting with people. Any advice on what major would best equip me for a successful career in that field?
It's terrific to see someone so determined to follow their interests, especially when it comes to helping and interacting with people. Based on your interest in a career in customer service, you might consider majoring in Communication, Psychology, or Business.
1. Communication:
A degree in Communication could be incredibly beneficial for your chosen career path. This major often covers topics such as interpersonal communication, public speaking, group dynamics, persuasion, media and culture, and more. These skills and knowledge areas are critical for a career in customer service, as they equip you to clearly articulate information, effectively respond to customer inquiries, and manage complex interpersonal interactions.
2. Psychology:
A degree in Psychology can also be invaluable, as understanding human behavior can help you figure out the best solutions for customer needs and complaints. It could also improve your ability to sympathize with customers, helping you to provide exceptional service in challenging situations.
3. Business:
Although you said you're not particularly drawn towards Business as a major, it's worth considering due to its relevance to Customer Service. A Business Administration or Management major often covers customer relations, conflict resolution, and problem-solving, which are all crucial in customer service roles.
Again, it's fantastic you're pursuing what you're passionate about. Remember, the best major for you will not only depend on its applicability to your desired career but also on your personal interests, skills, and academic strengths. Good luck!
