Is a finance class in high school seen as rigorous by admissions officers?

Quick question—I have the option to take a finance class during my senior year. Does this class count as a rigorous course in the eyes of college admissions? I want to demonstrate that I'm willing to challenge myself, but also really want to learn more about finance. Thoughts?

It's great to hear you're considering both your interests and how your course choices might appear to college admissions officers. While finance is a practical and relevant subject, its perceived rigor can depend on how the class is structured at your high school and what other courses are available to you.

Typically, Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), honors, or dual enrollment courses are more readily recognized as rigorous by admissions officers. If your school's finance class is one of these, it could certainly be seen as challenging. If not, it still can be a valuable part of your senior year schedule, especially if it aligns with your intended major or career interests.

Admissions committees look for students who are well prepared academically and have genuine interests. If taking the finance class means choosing between it and a higher-level course in another subject that isn't as directly tied to your goals, it could be a worthwhile choice.

Remember, it's all about balance—you should still try to take the most challenging courses you can handle while also following your passions. Ultimately, staying true to your interests can even make for a compelling narrative in your college applications.
