So I'm a bit confused about when I'm supposed to take the PSAT. I know some of my friends took it sophomore year, but is there like the "right" age to take it? Really want to get that National Merit Scholarship so I just want to make sure I don't miss out.
Hello! It’s great that you’re already thinking about the PSAT and the National Merit Scholarship. Typically, students take the PSAT/NMSQT (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) in October of their junior year.
Some students choose to take the PSAT 10, which is the same test but doesn't qualify for scholarships, in their sophomore year to get a feel for the exam. Doing this can help you identify areas to focus on when you study for the junior year test, which is the one that counts for National Merit.
Keep in mind though, it's the junior year PSAT that's the official qualifier for the National Merit Scholarship competition. To ensure you don’t miss out, check with your school's counseling office for registration deadlines and more details specific to your school.
Also, it can’t hurt to start some light review now in areas you might feel less confident in, so when test time comes around, you’ll be fully prepared. Good luck!
