Recommendations for Dance Programs in California Universities?

Hey folks, I’m in my junior year of high school and passionate about pursuing a dance career. Since I live in California, I want to check out college options in my home state first. Any input on the best programs?

For sure! California offers quite a few reputable colleges for Dance learning. Let's start with the University of California (UC) system. UC Irvine's Dance program is well-regarded nationally. They offer B.A. and B.F.A. programs with faculty from a range of dance backgrounds, such as ballet, modern, jazz, and even dance science.

Pomona College has an excellent Dance program too, with what they call a liberal arts approach. They put an emphasis on creativity, critical thought, and social context in their curriculum. As part of a small liberal arts college, you might get more one-on-one attention here compared to larger institutions.

In the California State University (CSU) system, CSU Long Beach is known for its strong Dance department. They offer B.A. and B.F.A. degrees in Dance, and the faculty boasts professionals from various dance backgrounds too.

If you're open to looking at private institutions, Loyola Marymount University offers a B.A. in Dance, focusing on modern dance, ballet, jazz, and world dance forms. They also offer a Dance major with a Teaching Credential option.

When you're doing your research, consider the style of dance you're interested in – different schools may specialize in different forms. Speak to the faculty or current students, if possible, and try to visit the campuses to get a sense of their facilities and community. The best program for you will be where you feel you fit best as an individual!
