How do I set study skills goals in my IEP for high school?

Hi everyone! I'm a high school junior with an IEP, and I'm looking to set some study skills goals for next year. I want to make sure they're realistic and will actually help me do better academically. Can anyone who has gone through this process give me some advice on how to formulate effective study skills goals for my IEP? Thanks in advance!

Hi there! It's wonderful that you're proactive about setting study skills goals for your IEP. Since you're a junior, you've had some time to understand what areas you might need to strengthen.

A good starting point would be to reflect on which subjects or types of assignments challenge you most and require more effective studying strategies. Once you've identified these, you can formulate specific goals.

For example, if time management is an issue, you might set a goal like 'I will use a planner to track all assignments and dedicate specific time slots for studying each subject each week.' Or, if retaining information is a concern, your goal could be 'I will learn and practice two new memory retention techniques by the end of the first semester.'

It's also valuable to include how you'll measure progress towards these goals. That could be by tracking homework completion rates or grades on quizzes, or by checking in regularly with your teacher to see how your participation grade is doing. Make sure to discuss these goals with your IEP team—they're there to support you and can offer additional insights on making your goals achievable and aligned with your learning needs. Remember, the objective here is to create goals that will not only challenge you but also provide a clear path for improvement.

Good luck, and keep us posted on your journey!
